" What our patients say... "

As a family we all have excellent treatment here. What stands out the most is how my son is treated. Everyone speaks to him directly, explains everything to him, shows him his x rays or equipment being used. He’s 8 and has had many terrible encounters with bad professionals through his cancer treatment and on going late effects. Everyone here is textbook excellent on how to minimise trauma and follow the children’s charter, subtle and not forced behaviour. This might not be a big deal to some children but to the ones that need it it’s everything. For us means a happy boy who enjoys seeing the Dentist.

Children’s dental care FAQS

The British society of Paediatric dentistry recommends that children have a dental check as soon as their first teeth appear (around 12-18 months of age). For patients under 18, NICE recommend a maximum interval between checks of 12 months. [3]

Early visits help establish good habits and allow your dentist to monitor the development of your child’s teeth, ensuring any potential issues are caught early. Our dentists in Bury St Edmunds are experienced in making families with children feel welcome.

Preparing your child for their first dental appointment can help reduce anxiety. Talk to them about what to expect in a positive and calm manner. Reading books or watching videos about visiting the dentist can also be helpful.

During a child’s dental check-up, one of our experienced dentists will examine their teeth, gums, and jaw to ensure they are developing properly.

NICE recommends that children visit the dentist every six months for routine check-ups. Regular visits help maintain good oral health and allow the dentist to monitor the growth and development of your child’s teeth [3]. At our Bury St Edmunds dental practice, we offer convenient scheduling to accommodate families in East Anglia.

In the event of a dental emergency, such as a knocked-out tooth or toothache, contact your dentist immediately. Our Bury St Edmunds dental practice provides prompt care for dental emergencies, ensuring your child receives the advice and attention they need. We are committed to serving families across East Anglia with urgent dental care when it’s needed most. See our page on dental trauma.

You can teach your child to brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. It is important to use just a smear of toothpaste on the brush. Supervise their brushing to help them reach all areas of their mouth and positively encourage them when they brush their teeth. Promote healthy eating habits such as limiting sugary snacks & sweet drinks, and schedule regular dental visits. You can also use our free to download and print brushing rewards chart which can be found here: Sycamore Smiles Brushing Rewards Chart

Yes, dental X-rays are safe for children and are an important tool in diagnosing issues that may not be visible during a regular exam. The amount of radiation used in dental X-rays is very low. At our Bury St Edmunds practice, we use digital X-rays to provide the lowest possible exposure.

Dental sealants are a protective resin coating applied to the chewing surfaces of your child’s back teeth to prevent cavities. Sealants are particularly effective for children who are at a high risk of tooth decay (caries). The NHS recommends that children should have sealants: “Place sealants in all pits and fissures of permanent molars as soon as possible after eruption”  (https://www.sdcep.org.uk/media/zwedxtvc/sdcep-prevention-and-management-of-dental-caries-in-children-guidance-in-brief-2nd-edition.pdf) Our Bury St Edmunds dental practice offers sealant applications as part of our comprehensive children's dentistry services.

If your child is afraid of the dentist, it’s important to remain calm and reassuring. Sycamore House is a family dental practice which is well-versed in handling dental anxiety in children, offering gentle care and a comforting atmosphere for all our patients and their families.
